Three boys

James, aged 15

James is a soccer nut. He needs soccer as much as, if not more than, he needs air. His boots are like a part of his body, and when he runs onto the field he comes alive in a way that is striking. When he’s on the pitch his concentration is absolute, and he gives it his all. This is the one time that a pretty girl will not distract him. Nothing will distract him.

He has only one focus, and that is to win.

That said, he is the consummate sportsman. He takes losing heavily, but he never takes it badly. He is the first to shake hands with members of the opposing team, and he does it with regret but not a trace of bitterness.

He’s a popular boy who makes friends easily and well. He is loyal, and he’ll go the extra mile for a mate who is in trouble. More than once he’s stood by a friend who was getting picked on, and if asked he would say simply that that’s what mates do for each other.

Girls love him. He’s a good-looking boy and he has a certain trace of the pirate about him. He’s a nice boy with just enough rough to give him a slight air of devil-may-care. He’s had a few girlfriends, and his current one has been around for six months, which is a lifetime when you’re 15. He likes her, but chicks are hard work so he’s easy about where it all goes.

James’s dad died when he was seven, and there isn’t a day goes by where James doesn’t miss him. When he was younger he used to cry, but not now. When the old pains come back, he takes his ball out to the back of the house and spends an hour kicking it into the wall as hard as he can. And most days that’s enough.

He has no real ideas yet of where he’s headed, but he does well enough in school to know that most things are an option for him if he wants. His big dream would be to play soccer for an English side, but he’s never told anyone about that. When asked what he wants to do, he just shrugs his shoulders and says he’s not sure.

He loves his mum, although he doesn’t say it much these days. They fight a bit, mostly because he thinks she goes on too much about school, and dirty clothes left lying on bedroom floors, and dishes not put in the sink, and a thousand other things. No matter how bad things get between them, though, he never forgets that she’s been there for him the whole way. She is the bedrock upon which his life has been built, and he never forgets that.

Not ever.
